Sport (golf & cricket)
After devoting much time to golf
and cricket, have decided life is more fun if I swim, cycle and play tennis.
Economics & Trading
Prefer gambling on real world
events to the throw of a dice or turn of a card (though have represented Singapore at
bridge and played on the Merit European backgammon circuit in my time too).
Politics
Dirty business but fascinating...
Languages
Will I ever become fluent in
Spanish? Que sé yo.
Family
The earliest male ancestor we
know of was Joseph Saperia, one of two children (the
other, his brother, was stabbed and killed whilst relatively young). We are not
sure of his birthplace (Suwalki?). He emigrated to Leeds,
England, in
1888 to work as a tailors machinist. He married Rachel Harris in Belgrave St Synagogue on 14th June, 1891. The marriage
record gives his age as 24 and his address as 89 Byron St. Rachel, a tailoress, was aged 22, the daughter of Solomon Harris, a tailors presser. Their name was probably changed to Harris
from Hirsh; she was the sister of Myer Harris/Hirsh, with whom she lived.
Rachel gave birth to my grandfather, Menasseh, on
14th March, 1896. Their address at the time was 51 Back Nile St. In 1898, Joseph died in
Leeds, whereupon Rachel returned with Menasseh to the
Bialystok area , where apparently her family hailed from. Menasseh lived on in Bialystok
and married Jean (Szena) Wolfe, who gave birth to
Joseph (my father) in 1923. Menasseh and Jean emigrated to Belfast,
Northern Ireland,
in 1925, where Menasseh worked as a draper. They
chose Belfast
on the recommendation of a family friend, Jack Puchinski,
who had settled there previously. Menasseh died in
March 1956 in Belfast.
My father emigrated to London,
England in 1949, to further
his medical studies, and has lived in London
ever since.
My father had two brothers,
Jack and Mark. Jack, who died ten years ago, had two daughters, Debbie (in Israel) and Myhal
(just returned to London from San Francisco). Mark, who lives in Johannesburg with his
wife Gail, has three children. Jeremy is an engineer, currently living in Singapore.
Martin lives in Manchester, England and Lisa is in Johannesburg.
I have two sisters and a
brother. Anne, married to Phillip Silkoff, lives in
the USA.
Melanie, married to Simon Coberman, lives in London, England.
Malcolm, married to Martine Lovell, is a teacher in Nottingham, England.
All have children. I have a son (Edward) and daughter Tuesday. My
daughter is married to Carlo Reitano; she has two
children, Giorgio and Valentina.
